Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions page. On this page you can learn almost everything you need to know about what 3chan is, what an imageboard is and how to use one.
3chan is a mostly anonymous image-based forum also known as an (imageboard).
3chan was founded for a couple reasons with the most prominent reasons being:
3chan runs on a heavily modified version of futallaby that we internally refer to as Mitsuba (Japanese for 'Three Leaf').
The goal of our software is to be an open source eventually open source alternative to the closed source software known as Yotsuba.
Our software aims to have many new features, ideas and improvements implemented over what Yotsuba offers as well as being easier to install and manage.
We have plans to release the source code publicly when it is deemed good enough for public distribution.
Yes we are aware that many of you would like our source code to be released.
I've seen that some people who have never used an imageboard before have struggled to understand its simplicity so thats why I've decided to write this simple guide.
At the top of the page is the post form, all you need to fill out to be able to post a thread is the comment and file field everything else is optional.
An important thing to remember when creating a thread is to make sure you're not replying to an existing thread.
To check if you're replying to a thread just check above the post box to see if an orange bar with white text saying "Posting mode: Reply" is visible. If it says that then you're replying to an existing thread. You should press the [Return] or the [Catalog] button on the top or bottom left side if you want to create a new thread.
I've seen that some people who have never used an imageboard before have struggled to understand its simplicity so thats why I've decided to add this.
Scroll down to the thread you want to reply to and then press to [Reply] button, this will open the thread.
Once the thread is open you can view all the replies and make your own reply by filling out the comment field with your message, the comment field is the only thing that is required to reply everything else is optional.
(This is the same for making threads)
You can quote a post by typing (">") and what you want to quote, example: >This is a quote
You can reply to a specific post by putting two arrows and the post number, example: >>12345
You can also reply to posts from different boards by putting three arrows the board directory and the post number, example: >>>/www/
Comment |
Yes you can.
When you are creating a post you might've noticed that there is a password field. If you have browser cookies enabled this field will be automatically filled in by our software but if not you can freely set one or change the pre-set password anytime.
If the cookie password is the same for the post you made or if you know the password that you set then you will be able to delete your posts.
To delete a post simply press the tick box on the far left of the post and then scroll to the bottom of the page.
Once you are at the bottom of the page if you look at the bottom right you will see an area where you can enter your deletion password, choose to only delete the file from your post and then ultimately delete your post.
Please be aware that this action cannot be undone and we have no way of bringing your posts back once deleted.
To report a post for violating the rules you will need javascript enabled. (sorry)
Simply click the arrow "▶" to the far right of the post and then press "Report post".
Once you have clicked that option a small window will pop-up, simply follow the instructions layed out.
There is no account registration on 3chan but you can still verify your identity by using a tripcode.
To use a tripcode just put a # next to your name in the name field. Example: ("User#randompassword") The outcome would look like this. User!xdD43xY93U
If you put two hashtags "##" this will generate a secure tripcode. User!!xyFSC3v7gyv.
(Please note that secure tripcodes are site specific and won't look the same on other websites that run imageboards)

Sage is a way of replying to a thread without bumping it to the top of the board.
Nonoko returns you to the board index instead of the thread you replied to.
You can sage a thread by typing "sage" without the quotation marks into the Options field.
You can use nonoko and sage at the same time by typing "nonokosage" without the quotation marks into the Options field.
Options |
Have you ever been curious about what sort of things can be put into that mysterious options field well now you can find out.
Simply enter any of the options you want to use listed below into the options field, to use multiple options you must divide each option with a plus sign, comma or space.

This question can seem silly to those that are very familiar with imageboards but for those who aren't it can be confusing at first.
"Anonymous" is the name that is assigned to posters that haven't filled out the name field on the post form.
It is common practise for most users to post anonymously on imageboards but you are free to use a name or tripcode to identify yourself.
This ID is given to posters who chose to sage a thread on a board where IDs are enabled.
A capcode is like a tripcode that only members of our moderation team can use.
An admin capcode would look like this: ## Admin
A developer capcode would look like this: ## Developer
A manager capcode would look like this: ## Manager
A moderator capcode would look like this: ## Mod
Janitors only have a capcode on the super secret moderation board.
If you're banned you will be shown an error message telling you that you're banned and then you will be automatically redirected to the ban page when you try to post.
If you want to manually check if you're banned then go to https://3chan.co/banned.
